Question about preparation for the TOEFL test #1 (permalink) Wed Sep 19, 2007 23:26 pm   Question about preparation for the TOEFL test

Hi!

My name is Stephan and I want to study for one semester in the USA next winter. Unfortunatelly I didn't know that I already have to apply for such a semester in November with a passed toefl test with at least 79 points.
I was lucky and got a test appointment for the first week of October - of course this is all on very short notice. Now I'm wondering what you would suggest me in terms of preparation for the test. Is it hard to achieve 79 points?

My knowledge of English is so-so. I'm watching English TV shows quite often, but I never really write or even talk in English. Is there anything you would recommend me to do in the remaining two weeks I have?

Best,
Stephan

Question about preparation for the toefl test #2 (permalink) Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:42 am   Question about preparation for the toefl test

Hi stephan82,

A TOEFL IBT score of 79 points in total seems like a standard requirement for academic studies in an English-speaking country. No, it is not that difficult to get such a score, and I definitely believe you are going to do well in the test.

In order to feel more confident for the test and so as to refine your English skills further I suggest you do the following:

* Listen to English radio. As far as I know, you won't get to lip-read in the real TOEFL test, so listening to radio programmes is the closest you can get to TOEFL Listening in real life. The TOEFL Listening section typically features mostly American English accents.

* Read English newspaper articles on a regular basis; www.nytimes.com is a good resource.

* Speak some English. Talk to yourself or an interlocutor.

* Write some TOEFL-style essays and post them for comment. Other forum members may then be able to tell you if there is something in your writing that would make you lose marks in a real TOEFL test.

All the best

I was fortunate enough to get a test appointment which will be held on the first week of October and it has been a short notice. I would like to seek some advices from you, on how to prepare for the test. Will it be difficult to achieve 79 points?

I have an average English language proficiency level, even though i do not communicate or write in English; i often watched English TV programs. Any advices from you will be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Stephan

Question about preparation for the TOEFL test #5 (permalink) Tue Oct 09, 2007 14:23 pm   Question about preparation for the TOEFL test

Hi,
There some materials about IBT of TOEFL, such as delta, barron, Kaplan. You can test by yourself through these material and see which part is your week point.
IBT requires you a high level of listining skills.
I suggest Barron's book because it is much similar to the real IBT.

Hope this help.
