Hey Ralf, I asked a simple, straightforward question about something you'd written -- which, for whatever reason, you have chosen not to answer. Fine, it's entirely your decision whether you want to sidestep questions or not. But just look at what you have written instead! My goodness!
Perhaps you should take a closer look at that sentence you seem to have become so fond of posting and reposting. _________________ Amy

Hey, it's nice to see the good Amy back! Maybe my almost grammatical sentence did help
As for your question - I never answered it because I could not understand why you chose to pick on something I wrote a week ago when I felt you could have continued with our "how to behave in America" discussion.
I feel this is pointless. Let's try and minimise personality issues and vigorous patriotic vulnerability on this forum. Please. _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |

You're welcome, Alex.
Sorry to have mentioned it so late, but it was the first time I'd read the thread. Since this site specializes in ESL, and since you 1) had not been understood at first and 2) were subsequently corrected, I thought it worth acknowledging that you'd used the expression the right way. The expression may be mainly an American one, however. . _________________ Amy

As for your question - I never answered it because I could not understand why you chose to pick on something I wrote a week ago when I felt you could have continued with our "how to behave in America" discussion. Oh, I see. I didn't realize that this website had established rules governing who is allowed to post and in which specific threads people are and/or are not permitted to post. I never expected a language point to be officially "off-limits" on this site -- especially since the same point had already been misunderstood once and then miscorrected once in this very thread.
I feel this is pointless. Yes, that's quite apparent Let's try and minimise personality issues Good idea and vigorous patriotic vulnerability on this forum. I was concerned with a language issue, but I would agree that you seem to think your "patriotism" (or something) was being threatened. Please. Please feel free to address language issues. I'm aware that there are differences between BE and AmE. I'm also well aware that there are quite a few native speakers of British English who have a great deal of difficulty dealing with this fact. You are obviously one of them. |

You think you're so clever. Since you decided to avoid the issues discussed in the "how to behave in America" thread, you were eager to substantiate my alleged Anti-Americanism by picking on a language matter I had commented on a week earlier.
Let me assure you:
I have no intentions of conveying any image of American inferiority or European superiority; be it in culture or in language. This is why I asked you to get over this chip on your shoulder. _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |

Oh, but it still is a big deal, unfortunately. Some mentalities just don't keep pace with the times (not that this 'issue' has anything to do with times or trends). What's more, being gay is a crime in many countries, believe it or not. Even where it isn't punishable, homosexuality has sadly still a very long way to go before it is even tolerated.
Anyway, let's hope that one day will come when Edison can change his thread title to 'Yay, I'm gay!'. |

Conchita is right. And, beyond that, being gay "is not cool" (as one comment went here) in many so called progressive countries. Being openly gay in leading countries of the "free world" can and will cause difficulties. _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |
