Hi, everybody.

I'm having trouble with making out the words to the song "all I want" by Offspring. Here is what I was able to understand.
Could you, please listen to the song and fill up ??? in the text I provided
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zn9FPKcL-DM

PS: the song itself is very short (because there's no video - only audio).

----------------------------------------------
Day after day your whole life's a wreck
??? just breathe down your neck
You get no respect you get no relieve
You gotta speak up and yell out your piece

So back off your rules
Back off your ???
I'm sick of ???
----------------------------------------------

Many thanks !

(PS I tried looking the text up on the internet but it seems to be wrong...)

Hi Alex

I was able to understand all but the last line, but after looking at the lyrics online, I listened again and it does seem to be what they're singing:
Cause I'm sick of not living to stay alive

When I first saw the title of the song I figured it might be a remake of Tim McGraw's "All I Want".

Hi, Amy

Thanks for your help !!

Then, could you tell me what The powers that be means? (this does not make any sense to me...)
and what I'm sick of not living to stay alive means? (does it suggest that he lives not just to stay alive, but to do something else he doesn't want to?)

Thanks again!

Incidentally, do you like the song ?Wink

Hi Alex

"The powers that be" is a well-known phrase:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_powers_that_be
In the song, it refers to all of the people who have power over his life -- i.e. all of the people who have the authority to tell him what he must and must not do.

The last line means he's tired/bored with the fact that in order to stay alive, he isn't able to do any of the things he enjoys doing.

Do I like the song? It's OK, but not the type of music I usually listen to. Wink
