We don't have teachers' day in the United States. I'm a teacher and I would be embarrassed if anyone made me the focus of a day like that. I wouldn't like it.
Teachers here have a very militant labor union, and so people think less in terms of honoring their teachers than they just think that teachers get paid plenty, so they ought to do their job. |

Same her, no teacher's day in Germany. I think I'd like being treated to coffee and cake, though.

Militant unions in America, is that right? I thought unions lost their power (in America) as a result of the great depression. _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |

The unions were actually only getting started right before and during the depression. The industrial unions were very powerful right up to about 1980, when American industry started encountering competition from abroad. Most big industry was in the North, where in most states one can be forced to join a union in one's workplace. Southern states tend to be "right to work" states, which means that one can choose individually whether or not to join a union even if the union has been voted into one's factory. Foreign manufacturing companies, particularly the Japanese, have built their factories in these right to work states, and this is also resulting in a decline in union power.
However, the two major teachers' unions are extremely powerful, and they make huge donations to Democrat political candidates. This is usually given as the reason why no serious or significant attempts are made at education reform in the US, even though it's obvious to everyone that it's needed. All attempts at imposing standards, fostering competition, or anything else that's been known to improve the level of education are blocked, and it all ends up being reduced to calls for "more money for schools", which almost always ends up in the pockets of teachers, and thus to some degree in the coffers of the union. (It's been proven again and again that there's no relationship between the level of funding in a school and level of the students' achievement.) The union nearly always comes out against any sort of competency testing for teachers, as well as any scheme that would reward teachers monetarily depending on their competence. They are very militant, and they cause some real trouble. I hate them, but I'm forced to belong to one and pay dues to it. |

There's a quasi-tradition here to give your teacher an apple if you think that she's a good teacher, does a good job, etc. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |

| We celebrate it tomorrow, too, Sweety. Generally, the students arrange a party for their teachers, give postcards… |

We never threw pencils at our teachers, but from time to time we organized a cattle drive. |

In my school there was a math teacher who was hated just by every one in the school because she was stupid, spiteful, backstabbing witch and she could not explain a thing. One day a friend of mine even flipped that teacher off when she had her back turned, but she suddenly turned around and saw him doing that jest. Jezzz, how embarassing. _________________ Alex
