GRE TOPIC: The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority

------------------------------------------------------------------------
In our society there are issues that need to be addressed and reformed. But the authority is reluctant to address them. the authorities can be stimulated to look into these issues if the people question the authority. But two really important factors governing the 'true' fulfillment of the well-being is the motives and the manner the authority is questioned.

One really important factor is why the authority is challenged. If it is challenged for a reason that is not detrimental to the general good of a society, then and only then , confronting the authority will bear fruits. For example, recently the free mind buddhists challenged the autocratic rule in Myanmar. Their sole aim was the establishment of democracy, which in itself is for the people , by the people and of the people.
Questioning an authoiriuty should be solely for the purpose of the collective good of the society. there might be motives like personal prominnece , wealth and power for such questioning of the authority. like most people become leaders of the oppressed just for the back channel deals with the authority. Such practice leads to further sense of indignation among the oppressed.Insted of feeling well the opressed feel humiliated both by the false leaders and the authority. This leads to further chaos. Thus the motives of the confrontatoin of the authority determine the output of the well-being of the society.
Another major consideration is the manner in which we challenge the authoruity. The manner of challenging the authority depends on the gravity of the situations. in most cases mild resistance does the work, yet there are situations that require desperate measures. for example recently the our students body challenged the university governing body regarding the accredition of the engineering program. All the students of the university were summoned and a representative of the student body questioned the dean of the department infront of the students regardin their slow efforts for the accredition. The final result was that the program was awarded the accredition by the engineering council of the country. So sometimes a society can be made well by questioning the authority but in an appropraite way.
But, in the case of nations that are oppresed and subdued under the tyrannical rules, just exhibiting mildness would lead to no results. Mass movements are needed for the realization of freedom. It was evident in the efforts of the muslims and hindus of the subcontinent. It was their efforts that made possible the transformation of the world map. Thus, questioning the authority by confronting them leads to upbringing of the society but only in desperate times.
Finally , it can be stated that the authors claim ' the well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority' is vague. one has to look at differnt factors which govern the questioning and the manner of confronting the authority also influnences the desired well- being.
