A bit off-topic, but is it true Germans go to university after they had been working for years? That the Germans think going to university without working experience is unwise? Or is this just a rumour?

This sounds more like many Americans. A lot of us don't go right to university, and we often study and work at the same time. Plus, in the US you can start university at any age. I don't think any of these things are as true of the Germans as of the Americans. Many American MBA programs will not accept students who have not worked for several years in business.

However, I think there are some programs in Germany in which people enter university after an apprenticeship. I don't know much about those, so maybe Torsten or someone else can enlighten us.

Hi Nina,

Jamie is right -- it's not very common for Germans to go to university after several years in the corporate world. German universities have a tendency to focus on developing theoretical knowledge rather than practical skills so it doesn't make sense to go back to university after you have already gained first hand job experience. Jamie is also right in saying there a number of university programs in Germany that are tailored for people who have completed an apprenticeship.
