Very often, yes. It is a tradition that a street musician will leave his hat on the floor while he plays. Passers-by throw a donation of money into the hat for him.
In a similar way, 'Pull names out of a hat' means to draw names at random in a sort of lottery. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Do you say "to pass around"? I figure in the UK people say only "to pass round" and never "to pass around", right? _________________ What do I think of the pie?!
