This means simply enter. So you entered the road/drive and you only saw hills so it seemed to you as if you were miles away from any town.

Dear teacher.
I am sorry not to be cleared - minded enough to be convinced that to turn out the drive = to enter the road, as the two visions appear differently in me. Could you please explain a bit further?
