Hi everyone.

I'd like to ask about the meaing of the word 'chime' in the following context.

Goodier started jogging in place, and everyone else did likewise -- except Vega, who started half a step later. He'd been waiting for some kind of aural clue, like a chime or an order. (it's about soldiers on their morning run, and Goodier is the Sergeant).

Does the word 'chime' mean 'whistle' here?

Not a whistle, but I am perplexed as to what it might be, in a military context. I cannot find a direct definition on line, but perhaps it is military argot, a noun form of 'chime in', as with a marching chant:

I had a good home but I left (you're right!)
I had a good home but I left (you're right!)
Sound off! One, two
Sound off! Three, four
Cadence count! One, two, three, four,
One, two-- three, four!
