Phrase "it was just Companies 6 and 7" #1 (permalink) Mon Oct 29, 2007 21:07 pm   Phrase "it was just Companies 6 and 7"

Hello everyone,
I'd like to ask about the phrase "it was just Companies 6 and 7" in the following passage (it's a description of military operation).

By the time they reached the upward-curving drive-way that led to one of the many hotels that serviced the convention center, it was just Companies 6 and 7.

What does the phrase imply?

Hi KLPNO

Your sentence suggests that there were more than the two companies mentioned (6 + 7) prior to "the time they reached the upward-curving drive-way".

I'm not quite sure who the word 'they' refers to, however. Additional context is needed to say anything more about the sentence.

Hi Amy
Thank you very much.
Here is the context:

By the time they reached the upward-curving drive-way that led to one of the many hotels that serviced the convention center, it was just companies 6 and 7. Harbor Drive was a wide street, originally designated to carry the heavy vehicular traffic that used to be common in this region. Skyscrapers rose all around them, before giving way to clear skies.

Lieutenants Anderson and Lemish had peeled off to the right with 1 and 2 a little earlier to head down to the Marina and come in the back way. Just before reaching the hotel, Lieutenants d'Agostino, Giughan, and Demitrijian took 3,4 and 5 off to the left to go around to the far side of the convention center.

Capitan Henry had stayed with 6 and 7, which meant he'd be in charge of Vega's part of the op.

Hi KLPNO

'They' apparently refers to Captain Henry and the soldiers in Companies 6 and 7.

When Captain Henry and Companies 6 and 7 reached the upward-curving drive-way, there were no other companies (soldiers) with them. Companies 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were somewhere else.

Companies 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were no longer together with Companies 6 and 7 at the time when Captain Henry and Companies 6 and 7 reached the upward-curving drive-way.
