meaning of "Is not the words"? Tue Nov 06, 2007 23:49 pm  meaning of "Is not the words"?

Hi there!
As you might know there is a song called "more than words" by EXTREME...It is a very good one. Well, I hear it very often, but sometimes when listening, you focus on the music not the lyrics(well at least it happens to me). Anyway, there is a piece of the song that mentions:
"Saying I love you is not the words (singular form) I want to hear from you" (At the beginning of the song).

So, how could that be? I mean, for me that part sounds weird 'cause I would say,´Saying I love you are not the words (plural form) I want to hear from you´. However, I think there's a nice explanation for it, but I don't know what it is...so you tell me please!

.
I agree that the sentence structure is not the best, but the singular verb 'is' concords primarily with the subject, 'Saying', which is an uncountable (singular) gerund. Compare: My favorite fruit is bananas.

As with many song lyrics, this sentence reflects neither grammar nor logic.
