happened or had happened? why? #2 (permalink) Wed Nov 07, 2007 15:03 pm   happened or had happened? why?

Since it did not happen yesterday (the author is apparently putting it on a bit here), the action expressed by "happen" is unreal. Therefore, c had happened

That's my take Smile

I deleleted my answer almost instantly, since I wasn't satisfied with it. On the whole, I agree with what Alex said. The past perfect is used after 'as if/as though' to refer to an unreal situation in the past.

My answer seemed a bit redundant after Alex's explanation, that's all.

.
My opinion is that just as either are acceptable nowadays in I remember everything as if it was/were yesterday, both C and D are acceptable in your sentence, vaok. While the condition is certainly unreal, the fading use of the subjunctive causes its use here to appear hypercorrective to many speakers.

Nevertheless, if it is a test question, use C.

Sorry, vaok-- I hate those things. I was signed up for Skype for a while, and then Googletalk (or whatever it's called), but cancelled them both as a distraction.

Thank you anyway. In China there is a tool called QQ with which about several billion people can communicate with their friends or relatives when they are online. I think it quite useful because it is more convenient than emails. with it we can exchange ideas faster and save time.
