TOEFL essay sample: Governments must ensure that their major cities receive... Thu Nov 08, 2007 2:47 am  TOEFL essay sample: Governments must ensure that their major cities receive...

"Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated."

The historical cities, the cities renowned for their unique signs and concerned historical events, has always been drawing and attracting people all over the world and always will. Nevertheless, exactly that fact influences on their safety and being intact. Obviously, that is absolutely impossible without special additional insurance support from the side of the government that should include both financial and legislate enactment support.

The judgement about culture, history and tradition of the country is basically based on first impressions of people who visits it for the first time. Despite the fact that in each country there are a lot of cultural and historical places separated from the cities, like Great Wall in China, Stonehenge in England or pyramids in Egypt, very often tourists prefer exactly cities, cities with long history and old sights reflecting unique coloring of the country. That relates also to the people, who does not visit foreign countries deliberately with the aim of tourism, but doing that unintentionally by having a business trips. That fact takes place since the historical cities mainly became major cities as well. Statistically, the longer the age and history of the city, the more larger its population becomes with the time. That leads to the clustering of manifold amount of organizations and offices within its area and, consequently, to continual torrent of people, having business travels.

At the same time, not all historical sights are able to withstand heavy duty. They require constant care and maintenance. Without additional government resources for maintenance even such amazing historical monument like leaning tower of Pisa would have already plummeted. The same thing can be said about museums. Even the maintenance of the museum like Westminster Abbey cannot be compensated just by profits of its tickets sales.

Finally, organizing of traditional festivals is a really money consuming process, as it supposed the participation of big amount of people. Just direct decision of government about support can guarantee its success. Without it, such well-known traditions like carnival in Rio, knights tournament in Glasgow and Christmas ball in New York would have been forgotten. Upcoming olympic games in Beijing are going to take place just owing to the tremendous investments of the government of China in its capital.

Hence, financial support of cities by government is indispensable and the only way to save the main part of national culture. Just those kinds of measures can allow the cities to save the odor of historical myths permeated and saturated them throughout.
