Why people want to have american accent? Isn't more important to be understandable than to have an specific accent?
Are you goint to communicate better in american accent than in british accent?

I would half agree with migmam in that it really doesn't matter what kind of accent you have, especially if you are a beginner or intermediate student, and no matter how hard you study you won't really attain a specific accent unless you go to that particular country and live there for some time, but saying all that it is unfortunate but true that American accents are probably the most easiest recognized because of movies,tv,music , so in that context I think that yes, a neutral midwestern American accent is easier to understand for other speakers
