meaning of "satellite picks 'er up" #1 (permalink) Sat Nov 17, 2007 1:33 am   meaning of "satellite picks 'er up"

Hi everyone
The question I'm going to ask is connected with my previous question about "on it".

Putting her hands to her ears, she asked, "What the hell?--"
Nobody responded until the siren died down, at which point Liebniz said, "Ion storm. Mike?"
"On it," Mike said. He started steering the car into a U-turn, and headed for the nearest parking garage.
Fnnabella found her eyes falling on the kids playing bocce, who were still playing their game. "How far out is the storm?"
"When the siren goes off? 'bout ten minutes. Satellite picks 'er up and the siren's to tell everyone to get inside.

Does "satellite picks 'er up" mean "satellite picks her up" i.e. the satellite detects the storm approaching?

Yes, "satellite picks 'er up" means that the satellite detects the storm approaching. He could have said, "Satellite picks it up," but in very slangy colloquial language people are liable to use "her" in a situation like that.

You'll also hear someone say, "Let's get 'er done!" when they want the people with them to put out a strong effort to get some task finished.
