In my part of the United States, most people use gas water heaters in their homes. The newest ones are very efficient on-demand water heaters that don't waste gas.
In much of Eastern Europe, the hot water is piped into people's houses from a central water heating plant that is run by the city. This usually works fine, but twice a year, on the coldest day of spring or fall, they shut this plant down for maintenance, and everyone freezes at home for a whole weekend. |

Outdated info ... this was valid up to 1995 about , now the cost of gas change the system to small gas ovens individual for each flat. Solar in Poland is inefficient for heating but may be suitable for water heating it is widely offered by market now and may have great future. The more and more popular system is "warm pumps" (straight translation could be incorrect) They use difference between surface temperature and Earth temperature cumulating energy used both for hot water and heating accommodations.

Where I lived, it's still common even now for people to get hot water from their municipal heating plant. Some people have installed gas furnaces, but not most.

Solar is inefficient in the US also, although I see that now many of our street lights are run partially or fully by solar electricity.

We call those "heat pumps". |

| Although we supposedly get more sunshine in Spain than anywhere else in Europe, very few homes have solar heating systems, since solar energy is prohibitively expensive. |
How about just install a regular solar water heater,it may suit for family use and the price is not so expensive as we do export the solar water heater to Europe market at low price,i estimate that one 180 Liter capacity water heater is about $150,but it does not include the shipping fee of course
