Is it correct and natural to say "The goverment proclaimed a/the martial law in the city of LA" ?

Hi Alex

I wouldn't use an article at all:
"... proclaimed martial law in..."

However, you could possibly say this, for example:
"... proclaimed a state of martial law in..."

Did they really proclaim martial law in LA, or is this from a science fiction novel?

In my city they proclaim something like martial law for teenagers every year for about a week before Halloween. They don't call it that, but that's more or less what it is. There was also martial law for a couple of weeks in the late 1960s, but they called it "a state of emergency".

I have no idea, I made up that sentence irrespective of LA (or whatever else city).
So don't worry, you still may travel to LA with no risk of being shot
