if he actually did say "in a sense...", then yes, he made a mistake.

but "the" and "a" can be difficult to tell apart sometimes... i'd want to hear the quote first. But that notwithstanding, if he said "a", he made a mistake. He went on to explain that sense, so "the" was the proper article to use.
