The word 'gathering' is inappropriate for much the same reason. Where 'gathering' is a noun, it tends to refer to a meeting of people. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

According to Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary 'gather' as a verb also means 'collect.' This is the example sentence given She gathered up blackberries from the hedgerow. |

Yes, the word 'gather' means 'collect' when it is a verb. Did you have some point you wished to make about that? _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Crop is accepted because it is a noun. When we add -ing to a verb, it becomes a verbal noun or Gerund. Therefore, in the sentence
Clearly their father had been a wise man because all the work the sons had done on the land ensured that they had the best ......... for years.
'gathering' can be used to fill in the missing part. |

'Gathering cannot be used to fill the missing part because it is not precise enough. 'Gathering' could be a gathering of anything - but is usually a collection of people. ' _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
