I think we broached this general topic before, but I am unclear on why or how or who re the title change (to Are presents and presence homophones?), and I am concerned about the wisdom of changing it (for the reason given in the thread).

Could someone fill me in on the Greater Strategy?

Hello, MM

I can help thin the suspense fog. The following people have the power to change the title of any thread.

1- Torsten
2- Slava
3- Alan
4- Mister Micawber
5- Conchita

Tom

PS: By the way, I did not understand this part in your post: how or who re the title change

The thread title change investigation is over -- I was the perpetrator and I must admit Tom would make an excellent english-test.net inspector. I've changed the thread title since I deemed Alex's question as interesting as "the difference between present and gift". As a matter of fact, the initial thread didn't have any title as is usually the case when an unregistered user posts a message through one of the messages boxes on our pages (as opposed to the forum). It's a fact that the vast majority of people who post a message through one our quiz pages never come back to read any of the responses to their question. I'm not quite sure why this is the case but I suppose it's because most people simply don't understand how the system works. We have tried to explain it as clearly as possible but apparently it's still too complicated.

Thanks, Torsten-- does that mean that we should not bother very much about answering questions in that forum?

Not grammatical, Tom-- just a kind of written abbreviation or note for my idea.

Hi Charles,

Of course any answer in that forum is important because it helps many people learn English. What I was trying to say is that the person who posts a question on that particular forum is often not the person who actually reads the answer.

However, other people find that very thread either through Google or another way and they do benefit from the questions as well as the answers and any posts. Also, I know that a lot of our registered forum users go to that forum and read through the threads so we definitely should continue to answer any of those questions.

Hope this makes sense.
Thanks,
Torsten

Shocked Confused

Hi Torsten,

How do you come to that conclusion/inference? Confused Confused I mean why should anyone ask a question and donīt want be keen on reading or hearing the answer?

No critics, just curiosity!

Hi Michael,

I was referring to posts where people ask to tell them the correct answer to a particular question. It seems that our system can still be too complicated at times and somebody who says "What is the correct answer?" is not very likely to read the response to this question because the answer is already given in their initial post.
