In his latest newsletter Watch your language Alan tells us how "RP" (received pronunciation) emerged and how significant (or insignificant) it is in modern English. Since this is a highly interesting topic we'd love to hear your feedback here.

Thanks a lot! Sometimes I use your given information in my lessons and just now I`ve read your given essay and somewhere I couldn't`t catch some points of the story. But I think I`ll be able to rid of them soon,if you write in short and clear form the next time. But all the same I thank you for all the helpful essays and I notice that i`m improving my English on the way of reading your letters. Of course, it`s interesting, attractive and very useful. But why do you write me so long essays? What is the reason of putting down them? I`m waiting for your answer soon.

I have just read your e-mail and I was really surprised because I was not expecting to get it, well I think that the essay was high interesting and very out of this world because he has included some expression that I did not know that they mean, but as I was reading it I realized that there was the real meaning of each one on the same line, anyway thank so much for thinkin on me and spending your precious time.
I hope I hear from you so soon.
Take care and be happy!

Dear Alan
I've received your newsletter and I'm very glad about it. I will read all your materials with pleasure and will try to use them in my work. I'm from Republic of Georgia, from a small towm Batumi, which is the Black Sea resort. I work at the University and teach
English Grammar. Our aim is to teach students to use grammar correctly in their conversation. I always try to find different materials in internet, supply them with stories, dialogues, tests. I have a lot of tests from internet, I myself prepare tests for them, but of course it would be great to have your help. I like the book you've mentioned "English Grammar through stories". I've seen it in internet but couldn't open it. They suggest to buy it, but I don't know how to do it. I was told that it would cost a lot. How can I get it? You write that it may be a Christmas gift. Is it possible? I would be happy to have such a book. I have a lot of Grammar books but I'm always looking for something new.
Best regards

Dear Alan Townend,
sorry that my reflections on your piece on English pronunciations is coming in so late. Reading it made me "cry". It brought back all the memories of my years in the university and the reading of books like "My family and other animals" by Gerald Durell. Your use of idioms is heavenly and a welcome break from all the "regular/ordinary" ways of writing books that one finds around these days.

Each time I need to read books that are written with the kind of language you've used, I find that I have to refer back to scholastic writings. Sometimes one only needs just a good read before falling asleep.

Thanks for such an informative yet very enjoyable piece of writing. I can't wait to receive the next one.

Laughing Hi Alan, I always enjoy your essays, the give me a lot of insight into English language. One of my students is translating them into Czech and even translated they sound funny.
Thank you
