Dear Gopal,

Thank you very much for sharing your tremendous story with us. You have achieved an excellent level of English by learning the language yourself which shows that learning is much more effective than teaching. You are a real role model for people who want to learn English. You said that you bought an Oxford Dictionary to learn words and sample sentences. Could you please also tell me if you listened to English too? And how often do you use English in your current job?

Talk to you soon,
Torsten

Hello World! I am Devarishi Kumar from India. #17 (permalink) Sat Dec 08, 2007 14:45 pm   Hello World! I am Devarishi Kumar from India.

Hi Gopal,

You know i just aimlessly open this site cause i was not expect to hear anything from you. Oh Gopal, your writing is really a nice surprise for me. Many thanks. Maybe we have a similarity. I do love my nephew as i take after him whenever i don't have to go to my university. I always feel sad when i have little time for him. I'm sure you know how happy i am when holding him in my arms and kissing his pink cheeks. But it's terrible when seeing him struglling from a fever or a cough. Oh i do miss him now though he's just upstairs going to sleep. I do want to give my kisses to him now, and also to your lovely nephew.

Gopal, i really like your way of expressing your ideas in English. It's really so fluent and interesting that i do want to read again and again. I hope to be able to write such complicatingly expressed sentences, not as my simple ones.

Ah Gopal, i know that you are now pleased with your freedom. Eventhough, why don't you think about a lover? She (if you're a male that i guess) will give you the most warmness as well as happiness. Have you ever had any idea about that or did you use to have a girlfriend?

I see that you're having a very good job now. I'm in my senior year and i'll have to find a job soon to earn my own living. However, Gopal, it's bad to say that i don't know what to do in the future. I intend to apply for a post of a clerk in a Japanese Industrial Park but i'm not sure that i'll be successful. Oh my confidence! Crying or Very sad

By the way, can you tell me about your age (also your birthday so i can give you my congratulation)? I'm 20 (28/02/87) and i'm 21 for i have to add 1 year as the way Vietnamese often do when consider the age to get married, build house or other important things in life.

I have to say goodbye to you now. Maybe next Monday i'll have a good news. Perhaps i'll need your congratulation. Hope to see you asap.

Your friend,
Rose (Oh I do not like tea nor coffee as rarely do i take one. Maybe the situation will be different when i have a job.) Laughing

Here is your assignment: Read this story and then post a written summary here on the forum.

Then we'll give you some feedback on your writing skills.

Chao!

Ban co khoe khong? Toi la khoe. I hope I said it correctly. Rolling Eyes I am glad to have heard from you today as I was already expecting your reply here. Well, first let me tell you that I am a boy and my birthday falls on 20th November.

Hey! What happened to your “confidence” Question Okay, I will come back on to this topic later on because I am having a short break for some minutes only at this time. By they way, which stream or faculty are you graduating from- Arts, Commerce or Science, or something else? I graduated from Arts. I did my B.A. (Bachelor of Art) in Political Science, Economics, and English Literature in the year of 2005. Actually, I was also doing my M.A. (Master of Arts) in English Literature but I dropped it for some reasons. Hmm…I was not able to concentrate my mind on my study that year however I really wanted to complete that degree course.

Okay, now I am going. I will be back soon.

Have a nice night ahead! Smile

Yours friend,
Gopal.

Hi Torsten,

It is my pleasure that I have shared something from my life and experience with you all here on this wonderful forum. Smile

I think that learning is an ongoing process. We all learn something in our day to day life. We can never say that we have learnt everything about anything. I always look for something new to learn and understand. I am going to be a learner of the English language throughout my life.

Well, in order to improve my listening skills I began listening to English songs and watching English movies or programs on T.V. That has helped me a lot in understanding what other people are saying, how they are saying it, and how they are pronouncing English words.

I love to listen to English songs and I always do that while I am working on my computer at my room or on my iPod when I am outside. O! I can sing too! Hahha!!! Laughing But very badly! Laughing

Torsten, one thing I would like to recommend to the learners of the English language here on this forum is that if they want to learn a foreign language such as English, they should take books or grammar books written in English itself only. I mean one should avoid reading bi-lingual grammar books. It can be helpful in the beginning but after some basic understanding of that language one should surround oneself with an enviroment that has to offer nothing but that language. I could not get that environment so I created it. I would think in English and not in Hindi. I would imagine myself as talking to other people in English. This "imagination" method really works wonderfully! Very Happy

Well, now as I am working with an International organization and my work is to monitor the computer networks and servers of one of its US based clients so I am using English in my day to day activities. In fact, I have been using Englsih in my everyday life since I began learning it!

But I want to work on my voice and accent now. I have to eradicate my mother tongue influence or MTI as it is called. Now I am going to interacte with American people so I should find a way to understand them as clearly and properly as possible. I am taking care of my voice and accent also when I talk to them. Have you got any idea? I will listen to some recorded text in the voice and accent of the British and of the Americans to help me understand their way of speaking English.

O! It is getting very late now. It is already 9:41 pm now. So, I should leave now as I have to come here early tomorrow.

Thank you so much and wish you all the best! Smile

Yours truly,
Gopal.

I agree with Torsen. You, Gopal, are a real model for people who want to master English. For me, I really appreciate your efforst and ongoing curiosity to learn English. You sound really energetic and well I can't put into words how well you have done! Embarassed Very Happy I don't know if I can do like you. Smile

Oh, I have a question. If you usually think in English, imagine conversations in English, will you be able to go back into thinking in Hindi? I have that problem. I have tried to surround myself with English and again English. Very Happy However, when it is necessary for me to say or think in my native language, it's trouble-making. Confused

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for your nice appreciation. Smile Friend, however, I don't find it any difficult for me to think in my mother tongue but I am too much used to think in English to care to think in Hindi. Very Happy But, I must say that I do find it difficult to express myself and my ideas in Hindi. I can't write anything in my mother tongue! Even when I am sending a letter to my father I use English more often than Hindi. Sometimes I write poems which are in English but I hardly write anything in Hindi. If I try to write something in Hindi I end up writing two or three lines. Surprised And I am happy! Very Happy

Nicholas, I am leaving now. Talk to you soon again!

Yours friend,
Gopal.
