Hello Torsten,

Thanks for your welcom. It's nice to talk with you. I live in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. I learn English at school and university but i always feel lack of something. Maybe i (and many others) don't have much chance to practise E with foreigners in daily life. Therefore, my reaction is quite slow and my vocab is rather poor. I happened to find this website and i'm really attracted. Here i can talk and learn many things from all of you. Besides, it's great to have international friends. I find the life here very interesting. I will try to know more.

Hope to see you again,
Rose

Hi Rose,

I am wondering why do you think that you are not good at English? Rolling Eyes You are expressing yourself in a very deft way. Very Happy

Well, in order to improve your vocabulary simply learn new words every day and not just find out their meanings but also use them in your own sentences and see whether a word fits properly in a sentence or not. That way your progress will be amazing! Smile

Also note that a word can be used in more than a way. So, always remeber what type of the parts of speach you are going to apply to a particular word in your sentence.

I will write you more on Monday because on this Saturday and Sunday I shall have my holidays.

Hope to hear from you soon! Smile

Yours friend,
Gopal.

Hi Gopal,

It's true to say that i'm not very good at English. Hmmmm, Gopal, can you help me? I'm not very confident about myself. I often feel worse than others. I know you will think it's too terrible. However, maybe it helps me in someway as it makes me try to do my best.

Thank you for your advise. Can you tell me in more details about learning vocab? You devide it into topics or choose some in random? Gopal, it's bad to hear that i can not hear from you next 2 days. And i myself also have a plan. I'll come to my countryside for my grandmother's year's mind. So hope to see you on Monday.

Your friend,
Rose

Dear torson,

Thanks for the reply. Daily I read news paper, watch english news channels and some I used to practice in the net. Most of the time I try to learn english only except one thing i.e., practicing passages. I get struct in writing lengthy passages. I am in a confusion that how should I prepare a schedule to learn english better.

Hi Rose!

I just replied you but I see that my reply here is not appearing. So, let me take one more cup of coffee.

Well, I am wondering why do you think that your English is not so good Question Rolling Eyes You know, you express yourself in such a deft way that I like it very much.

Well, in order to improve your vocabulary learn new words every day and use them in your own sentences. That way you will get to know how words are used in different ways and properly. You know, there are eight types of words which are called Parts of Speech. So, you should be careful when you are using a word as to what type of parts of speech that word belongs to. It is also important to know that a word can be used as different types of the parts of speech and also with different meanings.

So, just keep your practice on by speaking, writing and thinking in English as much as you can in your day to day life.

O! Now I must go back. Take care and good night! Very Happy

Yours friend,
Gopal.

Hi Chandu,

How much time do you spend watching English TV and what exactly do you watch? Have you got access to movies (DVD) in English? What do you mean by "practicing passages"? Do you mean you have difficulty writing in English? If so, it might help if you copy sentences out of articles or books. Let me know what you think.

Talk to you soon,
Torsten

Dear Torson,

Usually I used to watch some pictures from HBO and Star movies and Daily news in NDTV. I dont have DVD's with me, I store movies in my sytem only. yes, I have difficulty in writing english. You said I need to copy sentences out of articles or books, I will do that. but in my view unless until we practice it, we cannot perfect in english. So please give some simple topics to me then it would be better choice for me to improve my skills in english. One thing I forgot i.e., I am poor in vocabulary also and can you suggest me in what way I can do better.

Hi Chandu,

As you know there are 4 language disciplines: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Two of these disciplines can be classified as "passive" and two are "active". This means, when you listen to English or read texts in English, you are getting "English input". You can compare your brain with the hard drive of a computer. First, you have to feed the hard drive of your computer with data and then your computer can give information out. Learning a language is very similar to this process. The more English you put into your head, the easier it will be for you to "produce" language. In other words, the more you listen to English and read in English, the better your English becomes. How did you learn your mother tongue? You heard other people speak your native language all day long. At some point you started imitating the sounds you heard. The more you surround yourself with English, the easier it will be for you to communicate in English. If you want to expand your vocabulary, you need to read and listen more. Also, you need to raise your awareness of what you hear and read. Analyze the language, look up words in dictionaries, ask grammar questions, observe how native speakers interact with other. By the way, how many of the tests on our site have you taken so far?

Regards,
Torsten
