Hi Ralf,
You probably know the term "Big Mac Index" and maybe you can use the average price of a pint of beer as a measurement of the PPP too. The price for consumer goods is established by demand and supply so if the relative price for a pint of beer is higher in Ireland than in Spain it is very likely that the Irish beer industry has a strong lobby and their market situation allows them to charge more than their Spanish "colleagues". I guess the average Spaniard drinks less beer than the average consumer in Ireland so the demand for beer in Ireland is probably higher than in Spain?

In Ireland, pint-purchasing power is a term sometimes referred to when people try to re-assess their general/real purchase power. Every time beer prices go up, people ask themselves "Can I still afford me pint?" In former, the answer used to be "Not really, but what the heck!" Today people still complain every time prices go up, but since the Celtic Tiger is more or less in full flow to this day "What the heck!" is all that has remained of it and a pint price of 6 euros (4 pounds, 8 dollars) doesn't prevent anyone from buying a round. The price for a pint has doubled in 10 years.
Spaniards don't drink as much beer, but to buy their beer in Ireland is less expensive than opting for the indigenous brew. Buying a bottle of i.e. premium German lager (like Becks) in an off-license shop (liquor store) costs you 2 euros. A Guinness is 3. _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |

A Guiness in a pub is something like 5.50€ in France. When it's "happy hour", all beers cost 4.50€, otherwise it's something between 5.50€ and 7€, but it's been a long time I haven't gone out elsewhere than at a friend's house therefore I'm not 100% sure! It might be cheaper though in some other places because where I live (on the French Riviera) and in Paris, everything is more expensive! |

Hi Johan,
Thanks for your answer. Have you got any quotes on Kronenbourg, Fischer or Kanterbrau? Which beer do you recommend? _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |

General prices in Nashville -- draft pints:
Guinness/Bass & other exotic (International beers & American premium beers): $3.50-$5 Domestic (American): $2-$3
Those are not happy hour prices -- during happy hour, those prices are generally discounted. Sometimes they'll offer 2-for-1 draft pints or bottles. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |

Hi Johan, Tom and Edwin,
Thanks for your quotes. In terms of dollars, you can buy a local amber for what seems about a dollar in China and 12 dollars in Norway. But how about your purchasing power when it comes to getting the next round in? I dread the prospect of having to order a round for my mates in Dublin when back for Christmas. In Germany I probably earn 70% of what they make, but my pint purchasing power is double as high. _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |

dude, you're in one of the great places for beer
I bought a six-pack of Warsteiner the other day and man, that is good beer. It cost something like $8-$9 but was worth every penny.
I generally prefer ales, but that is one lager ranking high on the salivation index. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |
