In that particular question, 'both' really isn't necessary. If it were to be used at all, the best place would be after 'will'.

I second that.

.
I agree with Jim, too.
Though the addition of "both" in the sentence does make it clear that the sentence is about two brothers (and not more than two), the current placement of the word "both" in the sentence seems a bit odd to me, too. It would be better after "will".

Test No. incompl/elem-5 "Finish/End", answer 1

The brothers will finsih school both together at the end of this year.

Correct answer: (c) finish

Your answer was: incorrect
your sentence:
The brothers will end school both together at the end of this year.
By the way, when a test-taker is given the solutions to the test, the word "finish" is misspelled (i.e. there is also a typo that needs fixing in this test):

finsih

Hi Nada,

When are you going to obey basic grammar rules and start each sentence with a capital letter and put a full stop at each sentence? Also, the word 'i' does not exist in English. Why are you using it?

Hi Torsten,

I am sorry for not following the exact rules of writing my message before. It was so slang I know ... may be because I was concerned on participating in the forum at the first purpose. From now I will work on rules of writing :!: :?.

Hi Torsten,
My score was 5 of 10, it's terrible really, but for me it's still difficult to make a difference between "end" and "finish". I'm sure that next time my skore will be better, but unfortunately it's becouse of my "eye memory":(

Dear Torsten,
My name is Bon. I am from Vietnam. As you known, I really want to study English and improve my English skills as fast as possible. It's great to hear that you ready to help me. Thank you very much.
After 3 times of trying I have already finished "end or finish" test. I have answered 8 questions out of 10 correctly (3 at first, 4 at second and 8 at third time). In my opinion, the different meaning between "end & finish" are: End is mentioned to a finished process, but finish is mentioned to a finished work.
My grammar in writing of mine is not good. I am very please if you can correct it for me, Torsten.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regadrs,
Le. QB.

Sorry,
I must correct a mistake I have already made in a few minutes ago: It is "My grammar in writing is not good", not "my grammar in writing of mine".

Hi Mr. Torsten

I'm sorry for my English, but if my english were good enough i didn't spend a lot of time to try to understand why my first answer, to one of the simplest test, was wrong.

I have read the post with the explanation about the right use of end and finish. I would like to explain why this question, in my opinion, is misleading.

Usually in Italy all students finish school together, because all schools close in the same day so I have thought that there was nothing to say about this. Therefore I've considered the real meaning of "the finish of the school" as "the last day of school in their life" (next year college?).

Assuming this scenario as true, should the right choise be the verb "end"?

I hope my question is understandable.
Thank you a lot.

Dear,Mr. Torsten

How are you and your team, thanks a lot for your effort.
concerning the difference between " Finish & End " , I can spot it as follow:

Finish = Compete
End = Stop

Finish means to complete an action, while end just means to stop it.It is always possible to end something without finishing it.
In other words, ending something means to stop doing it. you don't have to complete it you just stop doing it.
finishing something means taking something all the way to completion. completing the task.

Examples:
1-The golfers did not finish the match because the thunderstorm forced
an early ending.
2-I finished work early yesterday. ( I completed it )
3- We finished the project. (we completed the project)
4- The runner reached the finish. (the runner completed the race)

1- The pie eating contest ended before he was finished with his first pie.
2- She ended her career as an opera singer in 1968. (It means that she put an
end to her career and she won't do it any more)
3-We reached the end of the project. (the point the project stops)
4-We ended the project. (created a point at which we stopped the project)

-Thus, it is normal to say "I finished the race" if you mean that you were racing and then you passed the finish line.

You would only say " I ended the race" if you mean you some how interrupted or disrupted it. Like, other people would be racing and you yelled "STOP!!" and everyone stopped. That means you ENDED the race.

Thanks
Hazem
