I guess you know the meaning of "firewater", right? :lol:

Generally speaking, "taper off" refers to a gradual stop, whereas "slow down" simply means the speed or rate of consumption is reduced (but not necessarily stopped).

Of course. We have exactly the same word (olny we write it separatly - fire water) in Russian. :)

It's probably in Russian translations of novels by Karl May, that famous author of a massive number of tomes about the Wild West, who had never set foot in the United States. After he had finally taken a trip here, he stopped writing about America and began writing about the Middle East, a place where he also had probably not been.

When Americans go to Germany, the Czech Republic or Slovakia, many people there are amazed that we don't know anything about those stories or their characters. It would be like me expecting any German to know everything about The Katzenjammer Kids, an ancient American comic strip about German immigrants.
