Hi,

Could you tell me which phrase you would be happy with, please?
Quote:
1. I want to lie down to sleep (to lie is intransitive, and I think it fits the sentence)
2. I want to lay down to sleep (to lay is transitive, and therefore it does not fit the sentence)

You're right. The first sentence is the better one.

Your second sentence reminds me of a classic children's bedtime prayer:
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep;
And if I die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.
