Hi teachers,

I have a few sentences that I don't know if they are right or wrong.

1. All I did was to please her.
2. All I did was please her.
3. All I did was peasing her.
4. All I did was pleased her.

Furthermore, I've noticed that the word 'chat' is pronounced like 'that' in the American English. I've heard a Scotman pronouncing it as 'chart'. Is that okay?

Thank you for your answers.

Sentences 1 and 2 are correct. Sentence 3 doesn't make any sense, because there's no word "pease", and because of incorrect grammar. Sentence 4 is wrong because of incorrect grammar.

"Chat" is pronounced [tʃæt]. Some people might pronounce it [tʃat]. However, I think you misheard that Scotsman. I'm sure what he said was not "chart". If it was, it was wrong, and people wouldn't understand him.

Thanks very much, Jamie.

Haha...it's 'please'...very fast and careless typing made it.

Why is the fourth one wrong? I thought it was right because a grammar book by Michael Swan says it's right.

About 'Chat', I am really sure he said 'chart' when he meant 'chat'. Wow, thanks.

Which Michael Swan book is it, and what is the title of the section? If I have it, I'll look it up.

I'm sure number 4 is wrong, though.

Hi Jamie,

Hmm, it's Michael Swan, Practical English Grammar. What title of the section? I can't remember it, sorry, perhaps, you have to go to the appendix at the back of the book and search for 'emphasis'.

If you are really sure, then I'll go back again to check it for sure.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Nicholas and Jamie

I don't have my book handy at the moment, but Swan may have said that sentence 4 would be an acceptable version of this sentence:

All I did was (that) I pleased her.

It strikes me as odd without "that". If a student of mine wrote it, I'd correct it.

I had the same initial reaction you did when I read "All I did was pleased her". The sentence does look odd in writing. However, I don't think it would be terribly unusual for people to omit the words 'that I' in spoken English.

Even in spoken English it sounds like a slip of the tongue.

Hi Nicholas

It would be much more common to say "All she did was scream".

It still sounds like a mistake to me. I don't think it's good international English.

Thanks, Amy and Jamie.

What shall I do? I read the book 'Michael Swan, Practical English Usage and found that. So you both think it's an incorrect English. Thanks. :D

Think of it as local dialect and not international English. Understand it, but don't use it.
