Is "would" a tentative use in this sentence? Thu Jan 17, 2008 15:39 pm  Is "would" a tentative use in this sentence?

Greetings guys!
I was taught that sometimes the past form of a modal can suggest present references, that is what is called the tentative usage. For example in the following sentence:
If Merle "would" sing my song, I could come home and tell everyone I know that my dreams come true.
Does the WOULD here also used tentatively for suggesting that Merle would probably not willing to sing my song.
Could you please help me out?
Thank you in advance!

Hi,

The 'would' in your sentence hints at a fond wish , a condition and also there is an element of chance. There is a suggestion that 'if only she would ...' I think the tentative use of 'would' is more in line with being polite as in:'If you would care to follow me ...'

Alan

PS I think your sentence sounds better if you end it like this:' that my dreams have come true'
