some vs. any in negative sentences Tue Jan 22, 2008 3:25 am  some vs. any in negative sentences
 

1. There are not some boys in the room.
2. There are not any boys in the room.

I think the meaning of second sentence is "No boy is in the room". Am I right? But the problem is the first one. I guess its meaning is that "some of all boys in the room are gone. so the other boys are still in the room." I don't know my guess is right or wrong. Please let me know the difference!!!!!

The first one is odd and should be avoided for all but the most specific responses. It does not mean what you think; it is a spirited denial of another speaker's suggestion that there are some boys in the room.
