How to use the preposition 'for', 'to' correctly? #1 (permalink) Tue Jan 22, 2008 3:13 am   How to use the preposition 'for', 'to' correctly?

Hi, guys

1. Ann Chiang who is a female Center Director(CD) in the HsinChu WallStreet, said something for me and I was sad to hear what she said.

In this sentence above, I should use 'for' or 'to'? And the sentence 'I was sad'. I should say 'I was sad or I am sad'? I wonder I should use past tense or present tense in this situation.

2. It's really good to say 'thank you' for my friends, like you.

Again, in this sentence, have I used the preposition 'for' correctly? Please correct me as you could.

Finally, please also tell me how you use 'for','to' or give me some examples and explain them. I got confused with the preposition 'for' and 'to' indeed. Also, I wonder when I should say 'I was sad' or 'I am sad'? For instance, if something happened to me in the past, and I am still sad. I should say 'I am sad',am I right? But I am thinking it happened in the pass not present, should I use the verb of pass time in that situation? That what I got confused.

Thanks in advance.

Maggie^^

How to use the preposition 'for' , 'to' correctly? #2 (permalink) Tue Jan 22, 2008 14:00 pm   How to use the preposition 'for' , 'to' correctly?

I really don't like either ending for #1, Maggie--they sound awkward here. Otherwise, use 'was' for the past and 'am' for the present, as usual. Here, I suggest:

1. Ann Chiang, who is a female Center Director (CD) on(?) the HsinChu Wall Street, said something to me that made me sad.

2. It's really good to say 'thank you' to my friends, like you.

And all the uses of TO and FOR are far too many to enumerate!

Thanks a lot,Mister Micawber.

I still have some more questions.

1.I think in this situation I might say 'I was sad to hear that thing.' But I am thinking could I say 'I am sad to hear that thing'? It means I am still sad so far although it has already happened in the past. So which one is more suitable in this situation?

2. HsinChu WallStreet Institue is a kind of Enlgish learning institute where people can learn English. I wonder I should use the preposition,'on','in' or 'at'? Please help me.

Thanks in advace.

Maggie^^

1.
I was sad to hear that thing / I am sad to hear that thing -- Here, the infinitive has no time reference, so that the former statement indicates a past feeling while the latter statement indicates a present feeling.

2. Hsin Chu Wall Street Institute is a kind of English learning institute-- Ah! I though it was a street. Use at.

I chose Japan because I married a Japanese girl. I have been here since 1990, but I do not speak more than restaurant Japanese.
