Hello, world! Wed Jan 23, 2008 20:05 pm  Hello, world!

The name of my first program in language C++ was "Hello world" too. Now, I am a good programer but always remember how hard I wrote it.

Today, I searched in Google some forums to improve my English and I have found this forum. It is very interesting and useful for me. Long time, I read your postings in and I realized it is what I need. I like the way, which Torsten, Alan, Indiansoil, Yankee... often seriously and strictly read our topics and correct when occur mistakes. I want to make friends with you, who come from the different countries, will share own great knowledge... I like this site!

I am a newcomer here and please allow me to introduce myself.I am studying in ISTU (Irkutsk State Technical University) in Russia. My Russian name is Anton Petrovich. I came to Irkutsk city 3 years ago, there for I can fluently speak and understand in Russian. I like English but I can't study English in university with Russian students because I have to pay a lot money for it and I am so poor student Crying or Very sad ! I decide to read books and to communicate with English speakers in sites. But my problems are nobody did not teach me how exactly study English, grammar, did not write frequently and most of the time I use native language or Russian... I know meanings of words but can't write an essay without mistakes Sad .

I am having holiday now and I want to study English with you. My essay is short and perhaps has not sciential , literary style because some sentences I simply translate from Russian into English. Please, don't blame me. I hope you help me correct mistakes and improve English skills! I am a good listener.

This is my first thread in site. Nice to meet you! I am waiting for your advices.

Best regards from Irkutst for you.
Anton.

Hello, world! Thu Jan 24, 2008 20:42 pm  Hello, world!

Hi Anton,
nice to meet you,
my name is David and I'm 16
I study at a commercial Academy (economy and so on ... ) but my primary subject is programming. I learn this subject first year and we have already started to work with(in) Pascal. But I've got a problem ...
...I think I'm rather good at languages and maybe at the economy, but I'm not sure if I've chosen good the programming. I understand all and all is very logic, but I don't know to create the program myself. When our teacher write a program so I understand what is he writing, but I don't know if I would be able to write it myself.
Have u had this problem at the beginning too ?
Do you think that I can improve it somehow ? Do you think it will be better every more program I write ? or do you think it should be in “me“ already ? (I hope that you understand what I mean)
Thank you and tell me what do you REALLY think !

PS: to be honest I don't exercise it at home. We have only 2 hours lesson a week !!! but all my schoolmates has a similar problem ... and all my mates say “you will never use pascal !!!“ ... is it true ?
PSS: thank you and excuse my english (I learn english 1,5 year)

Hi, Anton

Nice to see another programmer on the forum ! Are you familiar with C#, Visual Basic and Framework 2.0 (Oh... Framework 3.5 came out on November 16th, 2006 - time flies !)? It is a very andanced and promising technology and I hope every program will run on the Framework soon !
(and I've been working with it for over 2 years on end)

Well, I can give you a sound piece of advice - never put "advice" in plural - it does not work in English (though it works in Russian). Just think about "advice" as a piece of helpful information (you never say "informations" in Russian, do you?)
Another word which is not used in plural in English (but can be used in plural in Russian) - the word "evidence".

Good luck with your English ! Very Happy

Hello, world! Thu Feb 28, 2008 7:08 am  Hello, world!

Hi Anton
I am looking for work in Irkutsk as an English teacher. I spoke to people at your university; apparently they don't teach English there. If they do, can you let me know who to contact, with contact details? Or do you know other places which employ English teachers? Cole

Hi Anton,

How many software programs have you created so far and what kind of program is "Hello World"?

So what is your native language?

Anton, you can "teach" yourself or better, you can learn English. What you need is "constand input". This means you have to surround yourself with spoken English on daily basis not only when you are on holiday. Listen to English TV, radio, movies, audio books, interviews, anything you can get your hands (or rather ears) on. You need to absorb as much English as possible and don't worry about grammar -- your brain is capable of storing entire sentences and sentences contain grammar. Don't make the mistake and try to learn grammar separately from all the other language elements. Instead of learning grammar rules, find something that you are really interested in. What do you like in addition to programming? Do you have a favourite TV show or movie? Maybe a cartoon? For example, if you are a fan of The Simpsons, watch them in the original version. If are not a fan of them yet, you can watch the cartoon anyway and maybe you'll become a fan then. Whatever you do, make sure you like it. Try to use authentic materials as soon as possible. By "authentic materials" I mean things a native speaker would use too. A native English speaker would never use an English textbook that was written for learners of English. Most of those materials have one major drawback: They are boring, outdated and often contain language no native speaker would ever use. So get 'the real stuff' -- cartoons ffor kids are an excellent place to start with because they are fun and interesting.
