Below is the next paragraph:
| Quote: |
| But I don't believe I have to write down. Even though we're all swamped every day with sloppy and deceitful language and bad writing, you can learn to say something simple and meaningful---and that's all a college essay asks. Just as my students did, you can write a good one that distinguishes you from everybody else. What nobody can do is just "dash it off." In fact, before you even put pen to application there are two things you must do to help yourself: Read other essays, and Practice. |
What does the bold "dash if off" mean? |

| Hi, I think that "write down" here means to re-write the book in a simpler form. The "common denominator" is related to this and means the level at which most readers will understand. The last sentence means that this level will be very low and implies the readers have the intelligence level of apes (writing by holding crayons in their fist, and dragging their arms on the ground). The term "dash it off" means to write something very quickly without giving much thought to it. Hope this helps. |
