Pussy cat, pussy cat, where have you been? I’ve been up to London to look at the queen. Pussy cat, pussy cat, what did you there? I frightened a little mouse under her chair.

Hi, I have a question regaring this poem. 1) Does the third line lack something? I think it should be "what did you do there"? Yes, in everyday English, you would need to add the word 'do'. However, this is not "everyday" English. It is a poem. Is "what did you there" grammatically correct? Poets and lyricists frequently use something called "poetic license", which means they sort of cheat on the English grammar a bit in order to make sure the words in the poem or lyrics fit the beat. 2) What's the gist of the poem? The cat go to meet the queen and catch a mouse for her. What does this suggest? It's simply a fanciful and fun children's poem. The cat goes off somewhere, and later the cat says it visited the queen. And one thing it did while visiting the queen was that it scared a little mouse.
