question on 'ed'? #1 (permalink) Fri Feb 08, 2008 10:47 am   question on 'ed'?

Dear teachers,

why is it that the verb in 1st sentence has 'ed' ?

Have you played a musical instrument when you were a kid?

Did you play a musical instrument when you were a kid?

Thanks!

Hi,

'Played' is the past participle and 'play' is the infinitive form. Another example with a different verb:

Have you understood?

Did you understand?

1st sentence refers to Present Perfect the second one refers to Past simple. There is a grammar construction which should be used for questions in these tenses.

Present Perfect question:
e.g. Have you ever been to France?
*been as past participle
Past Simple question:
e.g. Did you see that?
* see as infinitive ( not seen)
