Which of the following sentences in reported speech is correct? "Could you cook dinner?" he asked Sue.
He asked Sue to cook dinner. (I think this is correct as the question is a request.)
He asked Sue if she could cook dinner. (This is given in the answer key of a workbook. I wonder whether it is a mistake or whether you can also use "if" to introduce a request and not only to introduce reported questions without a question word.)
The next example is similar: "Kiki, would you please call a taxi?" she asked. She asked Kiki to call a taxi. She asked Kiki if she would call a taxi.
"Please listen everyone," the announcer said. The announcer asked everyone to listen. The announcer told everyone to listen. (Do you only use "ask" as reporting verb if there is a "please" in the command? Is "told" incorrect in this example?)
Thank you for your help! :D |
