A friend of mine asked me to translate the following sentence:

'Since the players were barred from using an on-site setting at the U.S. Open, ATP chief Hamilton Jordan seized the opportunity to demonstrate how the players were on the outside looking in.'

I think there is a grammatical error in the end, and it is unclear what the author wanted to say or it's just my incapability to understand it... Rather confusing, what do you think?

Although there doesn't seem to be any errors here, it is a complicated sentence. It is confusing because it sounds as if the sentence needs to state what the players are on the outside of, and what they are looking in on. However, "on the outside looking in" is a turn of phrase that can be used as a metaphor for being 'left out'. Therefore, we do not, in fact, need to know this information.
