Hi Molly,

This is acceptable. This construction is used mainly when referring to people and in your sentence emphasizes that we are talking about his friend. The so called double negative is also used to make things clearer as can be seen in these examples:

That is a painting of George = George is the subject of the painting.
That is a painting of George's = That painting is owned by George.
