Can a person be haunted by a ghost? #1 (permalink) Sun Feb 24, 2008 20:37 pm   Can a person be haunted by a ghost?

Hi

Could you please tell me if a person could be haunted by a ghost? I have seen many movies where a ghost visits a person regularly and "takes control of him/her". Let's say the movie 'exorcist'.

So, how should I say this:

Quote:
In Exorcist the chaild was ________ by a ghost.

.
I think the word you're looking for is 'possessed', Tom. That certainly fits The Exorcist anyway.

A person can be haunted by traumatic memories, for example.

Hi Tom,

It's child, by the way. Places are usually said to be haunted by ghosts. When we use 'haunt' for people, it's in a slightly different way. You can say: He is constantly haunted by bad memories/experiences he had when he served as a soldier.
In other words he can't get these thoughts out of his mind.
