Usage of One ("only one transaction of each type need be tested") Wed Mar 05, 2008 4:25 am  Usage of One ("only one transaction of each type need be tested")

Hi

I have a grammar question about this sentence from one of my testbooks

"only one transaction of each type need be tested"

1) I thought the correct verb is NEEDS instead of NEED

One needs to be tested

2) Is "need be tested" better than "need to be tested"

Thanks

"...need be tested..." and "...needs to be tested..." are both correct, and neither one is better than the other.

In "...need be tested..." the verb is in the subjuntive, and that's why it doesn't have any tense marking.

You can look up the English subjunctive in a grammar book, or on a website.
