i learned at school "that" and "which" give the same meaning...what is the diffirence between that and which...why we use which in this sentences

They both have the same meaning in terms of things but you can't use a preposition before that.

Is there an explanation for this? I mean, the prepostion thing going before "that."

A very interesting question! I can only assume that the so-called linkage between noun and that (relative pronoun) is such that it cannot be broken. Not a very satisfactory answer I know but you've got me interested and I'll let you know when I've researched the topic.
