Invulnerable - Achillean? (SAT vocabulary test question) #1 (permalink) Wed Mar 12, 2008 18:10 pm   Invulnerable - Achillean? (SAT vocabulary test question)

Firstly, I'd like to apologize for being unable to properly utilize the function for asking a question of that type.
While doing a SAT vocabulary test, I came across this question:

adj. invulnerable
(a) prescript
(b) similar
(c) hydraulic
(d) achillean

The correct answer, according to the system, is 'achillean'. However, I disagree, because 'invulnerable' is something untouchable, that couldn't be harmed or damaged. And, as we all know, 'Achilles heel' means 'weak spot'.

Hi,

Out of the 4 choices (d) seems the nearest but as you say, Achilles had one weak point, in his heel. Off the top of my head I would offer immune/impervious but they would need other words added as: to attack/criticism. Maybe the SAT tester should read up on Greek myths!

Hi SkiIuck

If you check Webster's Dictionary for the word 'achillean', you will find 'invincible' as one of the definitions. And, yes, Achilles and his small weak spot (heel) are also well-known in the US.

Maybe you should simply think of it this way:
"Achilles was practically invincible." Wink
