Hi,

I have seen the way this useful word was used as a transitive verb (Too many sweets cloy the palate), and this makes me wonder if I can use to cloy as an intransitive verb, for example, do you find the following example natural (if not, please, feel free to make your amendments):

Quote:
Out of all sweet things, revenge never cloys

Thanks in advance !

Hi,

'Cloy' is both transitive and intransitive. It can be used figuratively also when talking about writing that is too rich in imagery as for example some of the very early poetry of the Romantic English poet, John Keats.

Hi, Alan

I see your point, thanks a lot !

Also, could you please, tell me if you find this sentence natural: Out of all sweet things, revenge never cloys?

Hi,

Yes, quite a snappy saying! Perhaps it could be reworded: Of all the sweet things in life, revenge never cloys.
