What would you do if you were an addict? #1 (permalink) Thu Mar 13, 2008 10:43 am   What would you do if you were an addict?

I have been a chess addict for the last 4 years and I feel that it disturbs me a lot, especially for my job, even though I love playing chess and analysing different positions.

What would you do if you were an addict? Is this something good? How can I get rid of this addiction?

Thanks for your advice in advance.

Zahir

Hi Zahir,

How do you define a 'chess addict'? How much time do you spend playing chess every day? Have you asked your chess friends what they think about your situation? Maybe your chess skills are good enough to start marketing them commercially?

Hi Torsten,

I spend about one or two hours analysing different positions at home after work. I also actively participate in a chess forum while I am at work. I am especially awful when I go to my hometown - I spend almost 70% of my time playing chess with my brother or at local tea house and play online till 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning.

I do not have many friends who play chess. However, I know some of the world's best players like Teimour Radjabov and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in person and they also add to my chess addiction. (Radjabov is the one who beat Kasparov when he was 13.)

As for marketing, I just write reports and articles for one international chess web site, but that does not bring any money to me. In my society, you cannot earn much money from chess.

By the way, I feel that if I stop posting on that chess forum, I will start posting here more... So, I look a bit hopeless about addiction Smile

Zahir, I wish you shared your 'chess addiction'. Based on your description I would say you still have the situation pretty much under control. I mean, we are talking about playing chess which is one of the most stimulating and productive mental activities. We are not talking about any form of drug addiction. I don't think that playing chess has even half the risk potential than any conventional 'drug'. It's absolutely amazing that you have met Teimour Radjabov and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in person. Where and when did you meet them and what did you talk about? How would you evaluate your chances of winning against one of both? And what about your brother, who of you both is the better player?

Regarding the commercial aspect of your 'chess addiction' -- I'm sure that there are ways of turning your passion into a business. You simply might not have approached the situation from this angle. It's a fact that you have something that is very valuable to other people. In other words, there is a market for your 'commodity'. Once you start seeing your 'addiction' as a blessing, you will find the means of taking it to the next level.

I totally agree with you but just want to say that it is quite distractive for my job...

Well, I meet both Radjabov and Mamedyarov from time to time but frequently write them emails. I just have very good relations with them. I usually speak to them about tournaments in which they take part. My chances to win any of them is equal to 1 to billion Wink

I play better chess than my brother who is younger than me... I can win because I play more than him.

I always wait when I will have better chances because of my knowledge and skills, as Abraham Lincoln said... (This is not an exact quotation from him though)

I call Zahir an excellent chess player. It’s a real pleasure for me to play with him. The only drawback that I haven’t eliminated so far is continual problems with the connection and full employment that are constantly stripping me of the opportunity to move in time. The online chess playing system calls for submitting a move within 5 days which causes a slight inconvenience. Crying or Very sad
