Hello everyone
I'd like to ask about the meaning of "were strung" in the following passage.

Sprawling homes stood north of the station, yards sprinkled with tall poles. Gas-jet lights were strung high overhead -- a cheat to bring light to a place without sunshine.

Does the phrase simply mean that these gas-jet lights were set/mounted high on the poles?

Hi KLPNO

I really don't know exactly what a "gas-jet light" is, but to me it sounds as though there was some sort of wire going from pole to pole, and there were lots of lights attached to/hanging from the wire between each pole.
