is all pural or singular? #1 (permalink) Tue Mar 18, 2008 20:49 pm   is all pural or singular?

Hi,

I found it difficult for me to understand this idiom:
"All that glitters is not gold"

Could someone help explain why the word 'glitter' bears a S in the sentence,
isn't [All] refering to all things, a plural noun?

Thanks!

Hi,

'All' is used here to mean 'every thing' that shines brightly/sparkles isn't necessarily gold. In other words you should not be impressed by outward appearances, especially if they are too bright.

Hi Fine,

You've probably heard of Shakespeare's play "All's well that ends well"?

Hi Alan,
what about the [All] in the following sentence:
"All people are good."
Does it mean [Every]?

Hi Torsten,
yes, I have heard that idiom many times before, but there comes many different explanations. Some said that it means [A good beginning is half done.] Is that true?
