between, among and the usage of 'at' #1 (permalink) Thu Mar 20, 2008 22:03 pm   between, among and the usage of 'at'

Hi,

Can someone explain me the difference between 'between' and 'among'?

Also, when is 'at' used? I found some music video where some girl leaved a message "Meet me at the wood", and some documentary where speaker said "... they'll go at the equator".

Why not meet me in the wood, or they'll go in the equator?

Thanks in advance.

"Between" always refers to two objects or people as in 'between you and me'. 'Among' refers to many objects of people as in 'there some among us who don't speak English'. "At" can be used to describe a location as in "let's meet at the restaurant" or "I learned English at school". "At the woo" sounds strange, are you sure the girl who left that message speaks standard English? "To go at the equator" doesn't make much sense either -- you can say "they'll go to the equator" or "they'll be walking near the equator".

wow, a quick reply..

I just search the internet and found that. It's actually forest, not wood (can you explain and that difference).

As for the equator, I don't know the exact sentence, but I'm quite sure they used 'at'.

Could you please explain better the usage of 'at', I still don't know when to use it. In my language in and at have one meaning and it's confusing me.

Hi,

'At' is in a way not very precise when it comes to the position. It would certainly be used as 'at equator' but I think less likely with wood. It is really an indirect and uncertain position near a place as Torsten has explained.

Hi! Maybe it's a little bit late but as far as I know, the preposition at in your sentence means that you'll be waiting for that person at the entrance of the forest, not in the middle or among the trees, for instance. That's the main difference between in and at in this kind of sentences.
That's how I understand it. I hope it helps you.
Greetings! Smile

Hi,
I think at is used with 'the Forest' because the Forest is the name of a place (or particular organization).
