Do you find the use of "a" natural and correct in the following use?

There was a total unity among the students at that time.

Hi Tom,

By using 'a' in this expression you emphasize that it was 'a unity' in contrast to perhaps 'a discord'. Omitting the 'a' makes simply the statement that they all agreed.
