. 'Would' is wrong. The sentence should read:
'The poor bird could/can not fly because it had/has a broken wing.' . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

In the second and third blanks I used the correct tense but in the first blank I thinked it must have been ''Could not have flied'' Good. You better revise your understanding of simple verb forms before this.
Your query "So is ''could not have flied'' acceptable?" is strange.
First learn the twenty basic forms in which verbs can be used , along with the past and past participle forms of verbs. That will help you write good English. I prefer: The bird could not fly because it had broken wings. 'Think' thought' and 'thought'. 'Fly' 'Flew' and 'flown'. n |
