TOEFL essay: Would you prefer to live in a small town or a big city? #1 (permalink) Wed Apr 09, 2008 3:35 am   TOEFL essay: Would you prefer to live in a small town or a big city?

Hi Alan, my TOEFL test is going to be soon, write comments on my essay. how much score i can get for this one?

Would you prefer to live in a small town or a big city?

The question being asked here is if I would prefer to live in a small town or a big city. Each of the options have its own advantages and disadvantages. To me it is clear that I would prefer to live in a big city.

I am born and brought up in a big city. A city with the latest technology, good infrastructure, mobile network, modern banks, shopping malls, easy access to hospitals, airports, schools, universities and also big companies for jobs.
As I am used to the above and they being a part of my daily living it seems scary for me to think of life without them.

In a small town I cant think of going to the bank standing in a queue everytime I need to withdraw money also it would be a hassel to withdraw money and personally go and pay the concerned agency. In big towns life is so easy making online payments and withdrawals through ATM’s and making cash payments through debit cards. For example you don’t have to worry going to a restaurant if you are carrying cash in your wallet a debit card will do the instant payment.

A small town would not have updated hospital facilities or good infrastructure. Recently my father had a severe heart attack wherein he collapsed and he was rushed to the nearest hospital and on the way we called the doctors with our mobile to inform them of our arrival. When we reached there the doctors were ready and the doctor told us only if we were 10 minutes late we would not have been able to save him. Thanks to the hospital facilites, the good roads because of which we reached on time, the cab facility which we took to the hospital as mum was to stiff due to shock to drive and ofcourse the mobile network. All this would have not been possible if it was a small town it give me shivers to think of the same situation to happen in a small town with none or not up to the mark facilities.

Big cities have good schools and universities. These very schools and universities prepare me to face the fast developing world today. Education in big cities is at par with the developments the world over and thus enabling me to adjust to this environment easily. In universities I get to interact with students from various parts of the world and interacting with them exposes me to new opinions and ideas and grooms me to fit into the real world today.

Big cities have most of the big companies with whom I could persue my career. The environment is competitive and will help me give my best. Also the salary levels in bigger cities are better which would help me elevate my status and standard of living.

Therefore it can be seen that I am cut out for a city life. I would feel more at home in a big city than a small town.
